The Laguna Dance Festival will kick off its fall schedule Sept. 3 during First Thursdays Art Walk Laguna Beach with two free public dance performances.

The festival’s 11th season — which includes three master classes — will end Sept. 13.

A master class for intermediate and advanced dancers ages 12 and older will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 10. The class will be led by instructors from Los Angeles-based Bodytraffic.

That evening, the Malpaso Dance Company from Havana, Cuba, will perform its West Coast premiere with the works “Despedida/Farewell,” “Under Fire” and “Why You Follow.” A pre-performance talk will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The dance performance itself will then take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road. The performance will repeat at the same time and venue on Sept. 11.

A technique class and repertory workshop taught by Malpaso personnel will be offered to intermediate and advanced dancers ages 12 and older from noon to 3 p.m. on Sept. 12 at the Laguna Beach High School Dance Studio.

San Francisco-based Alonzo King Lines Ballet will present “Biophony,” a dance performance exploring nature with soundscape at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Laguna Playhouse. An artists reception at 9 p.m. will allow guests to meet performers and choreographers from both dance companies.

Instructors from Alonzo King Lines Ballet will teach a master class to intermediate and advanced dancers ages 12 and older from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 13 at the Laguna Beach High School Dance Studio. Following the class will be a discussion at 1 p.m. and a second performance of “Biophony” at 2 p.m. at the Laguna Playhouse.
