Around Town: SchoolPower set for Dodgeball fundraiser

SchoolPower will hold its 6th annual dodgeball tournament fundraiser on Oct. 21.

The tournament will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. in the Laguna Beach High School gyms, starting with elementary age players and ending with the adult/high school finale.

There are 24 teams set to play in each of the fourth to fifth grade and sixth to eighth grade divisions, and 20 teams in the adult/high school division. There is still room for adult/high school teams. To sign up, visit lbschoolpower.org. Teams must have six to eight players with at least two players of opposite gender.

The winning team will take home the Golden Skull trophy. There will also be an award for best costume.

Entrance is free and grilled taco meals are available for advance purchase. Pre-order at lbschoolpower.org.

SchoolPower is Laguna Beach’s parent-based education foundation that raises money for all students at all four Laguna Beach public schools.

Reading for burgers

The Laguna Beach Library has a fall reading program for kids sponsored by In-n-Out Burgers called Cover to Cover.

Children ages 4 to 12 who read five books between now and Nov. 14 can earn a certificate for a free burger. Children can read up to 15 books for up to three coupons.

Marine Mammal Center raises more than ever

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center recently announced it raised $230,000 at its Sept. 20 2015 Marine Mammal Gala fundraiser, the highest grossing amount for the event.

The gala was held outside at The Ranch at Laguna Beach and hosted 300 attendees.

Guests were served an elegant sit-down dinner and fine wine while treated to an electric violin performance. Mark Christy of the Ranch awarded the annual Philanthropist of the Year award to his former teacher and co-founder of the center John Cunningham.

“This year’s Marine Mammal Gala at The Ranch at Laguna Beach was our most successful and beautiful event to date,” said Keith Matassa, PMMC Executive Director. “The generosity and kindness of the Laguna Beach community has directly helped us care for our seal and sea lion patients in need of medical attention, and we are so grateful for this support.”

All proceeds from the event will go toward the marine mammal center’s animal care and education programs.

School leaders speak at PTA event

Laguna Beach PTA Council’s Coffee Break speaker series kicked off the school year with a Meet the Leaders presentation hosted at the Laguna Beach Boys and Girls Club.

LBUSD Supt. Sherine Smith shared traits of the “Z Generation,” which included: they want to change the world; entrepreneurship is in their DNA; they are hyper-aware and concerned about man’s impact on the planet; they are eager to start working; and their attention spans are getting shorter.

Other topics of discussion included updates on instructional services, forward thinking, 4CLE classrooms, project-Based learning, BYOD, enrichment and choice, social emotional support, engaging, applying and going deeper, assessment results, and a facilities update.

MacGillivray Freeman’s ‘Humpback’ is award winner

Laguna-based MacGillivray Freeman Films was honored with three top film awards for “Humpback Whales” at the recent Giant Screen Cinema Assn. Achievement Awards in San Francisco.

The film won awards for Best Film of the Year, Best Film for Lifelong Learning, and Best Cinematography.

Voted on by the nearly 300 members of the Giant Screen Cinema Assn., the GSCA Achievement Awards honor the best films of the year produced for the giant-screen industry.

“There is no better subject for audiences to experience life-size on the giant screen than humpback whales, which are among the largest animals ever to live on earth,” said producer Shaun MacGillivray. “We look forward to following the success of ‘Humpback Whales’ with a strong line-up of films that includes ‘National Parks Adventure’ next year and ‘Dream Big: Engineering Wonders of the World’ in 2017.”

MacGillivray Freeman’s marketing team also won the MAC Award for Best Marketing Campaign by a Distributor for its “Humpback Whales” campaign. This is the ninth time the marketing team has won this award in the 11 years it has been eligible.
