Applications accepted for education awards

Orange County women who are the primary wage earners for their families and in need of financial assistance to go back to school can apply for the Women's Opportunity Award by the Soroptimists International of Laguna Beach, a volunteer group that focuses on improving the lives of women and girls, according to a news release.

The Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Award can be used for tuition, books, childcare, transportation or any other education-related expense. The Laguna Beach club will give a $2,500 cash grant to its recipient, and that person will have a chance for a $5,000 award from the Soroptimist regional level. The program culminates with three finalist being awarded $10,000 each.

Applications are online at silagunabeach.org or available by contacting Sandy Vetter at (949) 494-9907. Completed applications must be submitted by Dec. 1.

Open for Business workshop on Thursday

The next Open for Business workshop for business owners and others interested in opening or expanding businesses in the city will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Laguna Beach Community Center, 380 Third St.

Participants include Planning Commissioners Robert Zur Schmiede and Norm Grossman, and Principal Planner Monica Tuchscher according to a release from the city.

Rise2Shine hosting art show for Haiti

Rise2Shine is hosting its first Artist Shine4Haiti Charity Art Show from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday at Tivoli Too, 777 Laguna Canyon Road.

The charity art show will help raise funds for Haiti, which is still in need after the 2010 earthquake. Rise2Shine last year opened its first care center in Haiti, which has helped 92% of previously malnourished students reach a better weight, the release said.
