Volunteer emergency-response training registration opens

Registration is underway for Laguna Beach’s next round of Community Emergency Response Team training.

The CERT team is an organized group of volunteers ready to assist in a disaster.

The course, offered through the Laguna Beach Police Department, includes 25 hours of classroom and hands-on work and a drill to test the skills and knowledge obtained.

Topics include disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, terrorism traffic control and scene management.

Classes meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on consecutive Wednesdays beginning Sept. 30. The final drill will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 14. Attendance at all classes is mandatory.

Training is open to people 18 years and older who live or work in the city and have no felony convictions.

Applications must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. Sept. 25. Acceptance will be communicated through a confirmation email.

Registration forms are available at lagunabeachcity.net. Email completed applications to Emergency Operations Coordinator Jordan Villwock at jvillwock@lagunabeachcity.net or drop them off at the Police Department, at 505 Forest Ave.
