El Camino and Catalina intersection getting remade as a roundabout

Share

Crews will begin configuring the intersection of El Camino Del Mar and Catalina Street in Laguna Beach on Monday to create a roundabout for a two-year trial, according to a news release.

The intersection may be periodically closed during the next two weeks as the city adds stripes and signs and creates a central island filled with synthetic turf and artificial plants.

City staff selected the location because it is “unusual” and “confusing” and will use the next two years to see if the community likes the roundabout, Public Works Director Steve May wrote in an email.

“The roundabout will provide for more orderly traffic flow through the five-legged intersection while eliminating four stop signs ... that often require vehicles to stop unnecessarily,” May said.

The roundabout design and construction will cost $46,700.
