A Laguna Beach police officer was recognized last week for his contribution toward building relationships with downtown business owners and residents.

Zach Martinez received the Above and Beyond Award at the nonprofit Crime Survivors Inc.’s awards gala Friday at the Anaheim Marriott Suites hotel in Garden Grove.

The award is presented to public safety personnel from private and public sectors who “go above and beyond in assisting and helping victims of crime, empowering them to survive and thrive,” according to a news release.

The Laguna Beach Police Employees Assn. nominated Martinez, a foot patrol officer for the last two years who previously worked for the Los Angeles Police Department.

“The business owners and [Martinez] have established such a trusting relationship, they even have his cellphone number,” according to the release. “[Martinez’s] partnership with the business community has fostered a better line of communication and education with the businesses, [Visit Laguna Beach] and the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and led to recovery of stolen property and arrests of perpetrators.”

Crime Survivors’ mission is to provide support to crime victims.
