Private concert aims to bring drinking water to Uganda villages
The talents of world-renowned tenor Anthony Kearns helped raise awareness about a well-building project in Africa during a concert July 24 in Laguna Beach, according to a news release.
Kearns, a member of The Irish Tenors, headlined a private performance at the home of John Velasquez and Neil McMinn where supporters donated enough money to build two wells in Uganda.
Laguna Beach resident and real estate broker Nick Jordan established the nonprofit Wells of Life in 2009 to provide safe drinking water in the African country. To date, the foundation says, it has funded more than 148 wells with a goal of building 1,000.
Each well costs $6,000.
“Once clean water is provided to a community everything else becomes possible,” Jordan said in the release.
Kearns has performed for three U.S. presidents and participated with symphony orchestras such as the Boston Pops and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.
