Woman’s Club hands out backpacks

Share

Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach members purchased 125 backpacks filled with school supplies to give to needy Laguna Beach Unified School District students, according to a news release.

On Friday, four days before school started, Johnny Vasquez, the district’s community liaison, distributed backpacks to 20 families and will hold onto the rest in case more parents need them during the year. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade who qualify for free or reduced lunches are eligible to receive a backpack.

The Woman’s Club donated backpacks and school supplies in the past, board member Ellie Tipton Ortiz wrote in an email, but the backpack donation kicks off a new club initiative called the charitable fund, headed by Ortiz.

“The purpose of the charitable fund is to fill a gap in the community and assist Laguna Beach families where other organizations in our town are not able,” the release says.
