Laguna off to strong start

Boys' tennis and boys' volleyball programs, both Orange Coast League champions, open CIF playoffs with victories.

Laguna Beach athletes fared well in Orange Coast League competition during the past week and two Breakers teams — boys' tennis and boys' volleyball — began CIF Southern Section playoff action on a positive note.

The regular season may have come to an end this week for the Laguna Beach baseball and softball teams, but the 2012 campaign is far from over for both squads. By winning Orange Coast League games Tuesday, both have earned berths to the upcoming CIF Southern Section playoffs.

The Breakers took a step toward a possible CIF Southern Section playoff berth Tuesday by defeating Godinez, 3-2. They can wrap up a playoff berth with another win Friday at Godinez.

The Laguna Beach High boys' volleyball program pieced together another undefeated run through Orange Coast League play by rolling to three victories in the past week.

Tournament seeks volunteers

The men's and women's Laguna Open Volleyball Tournament starts Saturday at Main Beach. The tournament is seeking volunteers to serve as line judges during pool play and the playoffs. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt, gift certificate and front row seats to the tournament. Competition will take place in both AAA and Open level divisions.
