The Laguna Beach 14-under girls' water polo team opened 2014 on a positive note by winning the Mark Rauchwarger Memorial Cup last weekend in Santa Barbara.
The squad came out on top of its 15-team division winning by each of their five games.
Laguna opened the tournament Saturday with easy, 14-1 and 17-1 victories over Santa Barbara White and Simi, respectively. The team ended the day with a convincing, 14-4 win over Northwood to reach the semifinals. A strong performance against Rose Bowl in the semifinals Sunday led to a 12-3 victory which put Laguna in Sunday's final against the always strong host team, Santa Barbara.
Laguna jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the final game and never gave up the lead, finishing the tournament with a 12-8 victory.
The team next will compete at the Winterfest tournament Feb. 15.
The Laguna 14U girls' water polo team is Danielle Borelli, Audrey Duffy, Alana Evans, Delaney Gendron, Sophia Lucas, Ally Meredith, Isabel Riches, Evan Tingler, Thea Walsh and Kyla Whitelock. The team is coached by Matt Tingler.
