The Laguna Beach High softball team began its 2014 season Tuesday in Irvine and the Breakers, under new head coach Andrea Lorenz, fell, 15-7, to host University in nonleague play.
Lorenz takes over a program which last year went 10-18 overall, which tied for the fourth-best win total in program history, reached the CIF Southern Section playoffs for just the fourth time, and then won a postseason wild-card game to get to the first-round of the Division 5 tournament.
"Our goal for the year is to compete all the time not just in games but in practices as well," she said.
The Breakers begin play Friday at the Costa Mesa Tournament. They'll take on Crean Lutheran at 3:15 p.m. at TeWinkle Park.
The tournament continues Saturday and concludes March 14-15.
Lorenz said that the program also will take part in a "Play for Kay" special game May 1 to benefit women's cancers.
