The Laguna Beach High girls' basketball team evened out its summer record Tuesday by defeating La Quinta, 47-31, in summer league game at Ocean View High.
Led by the scoring of Jackie Cenan at the basket, the three-point shooting of Alexandra Lewis (three three-pointers) and Rachel Kenney and Nicole Davidson (one each), the Breakers were able to square their record at 2-2. Francesca Cecutti, playing for the first time this summer, made key contributions on the inside on offense and in rebounding on the defensive end.
Cenan was back in the Laguna lineup after the junior-to-be attended an Elite Girls' Basketball Camp at Arizona St last weekend. Cenan was one of 28 players invited to the camp.
In a league game June 25 against Orangewood Academy, Laguna only had four players available for the game. Laguna Coach Mark Lewis said Ocean View, which hosts the summer league, "was generous enough" to lend some of their players to compliment the Laguna lineup.
Laguna players saw most of the action in that game which was won (score not available) by Orangewood Academy, the defending CIF Southern Section Division 5 champion.
"It was a lot of fun for both Laguna girls and Ocean View girls to play together," Lewis said. "They were supporting each other and it was good to see camaraderie among players from different squads. Good stuff."
The Breakers resume summer play at Ocean View Wednesday and take on Long Beach Wilson.
The Breakers' busy summer schedule continues this week with league play at Godinez and Dana Hills.
Laguna started the summer by competing at the Corona del Mar tournament. The Breakers lost close games to El Dorado and Palm Desert (overtime), lost to Cypress but easily defeated Serrano.
At the Godinez summer league, Laguna scored victories over Northwood and Santa Ana last week, and Santa Ana Valley Monday.
The Breakers also started play this week in the Dana Hills summer league with games against Dana Hills, Edison and Mission Viejo.
Laguna hasn't been a full-strength during the first few weeks of summer ball.
"Our goal this summer is to gain experience and get better," Coach Bret Fleming said.
