Breakers seek first score, win

Share

A week after opening its season with a home loss, the Laguna Beach High football team will be after its initial win of its 2015 campaign when it returns to Guyer Field Friday to play host to Bolsa Grande.

Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Laguna is coming off 50-0 loss to Cerritos Valley Christian, a game that got away early from the Breakers.

Valley Christian, which had 392 yards of total offense in its opener, took a 21-0 lead after one quarter and extended its advantage to 41-0 at the half.

The Crusaders put their final nine points on the scoreboard in the third quarter.

Laguna managed only 111 yards of offense, lost three fumbles (one returned for a touchdown) and was intercepted twice.

Laguna annals show the loss as the most one-sided loss for a season and home opening game.

“Valley Christian is very athletic and at this stage of the season, are developed a lot further along then we are,” said Ted Clarke who was coaching his first game with the Laguna program. “We played the whole first quarter on our half of the field. Our offense has not jelled and that was apparent against a team that had superior talent and experience. I also made a bad coaching call on one of their touchdowns.”

Despite the one-sided defeat, Clarke said he saw many positives come out of the game.

“Watching game film the next day, we have some players come up with some big plays,” he said. “Lance Stewart had a fumble recovery. Adam Armstrong rolled downhill and made a really nice play, and Noah Kilburg leveled their lead blocker on one of their touchdown runs. He made a big-time play.

“Nobody is happy to have 50 points put up on them, but we took away a learning lesson from that game. One thing we are still trying to figure out, is how to practice fast at game speed. Our guys were learning that speed as the game went on.”

Laguna’s opponent Friday, Bolsa Grande, is playing its season opener. The Matadors, 1-9 a year ago, scrimmaged Anaheim Loara last week.

One of Laguna’s two wins last year came in its opener, a 45-12 victory at Bolsa Grande.

The Breakers lead the all-time series with the Matadors, 8-3. The teams are meeting for the fourth consecutive season, and the Breakers have won each of the previous three matchups.

Bolsa Grande, under third-year head Coach Matt Brinkerhoff, are led offensively by quarterback Eduardo Arreola and running backs Cristian Najera and Andrew Guillen.

“They have a few nice looking players and their program is growing,” Clarke said. “We’ll be in a barn-burner Friday.”
