Breakers stay hot

The Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams competed Wednesday at the Orange Coast League Cluster Meet at Irvine Regional Park, and it was a day that included several personal-best times for the Breakers.

At the boys’ varsity level, Laguna finished in second place behind Godinez. The Breakers’ Drake Butler broke the 16-minute mark with a time of 15:45, and the other Breakers hit the 16-minute mark for the first time. The Breakers’ junior varsity team also finished in second place.

The Laguna boys also competed Saturday at the Dana Hills Invitational. The varsity runners took first place in Division 3, and the freshmen won the invitational title for the third-straight year.

At the girls’ varsity level, Laguna took first place and captured the top four individual placements, and six of the top 10. Grace LaMontagne won the race in 18:50.44 and the Breakers captured the team title. In the JV race, Laguna’s Ana Kelly won in 20:29.27. The Breakers took the top four spots, and six of the top 10.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Breakers, ranked sixth in CIF Southern Section Division 2AA, collected their eighth win of the season by defeating host Newport Harbor in a nonleague match Tuesday, 25-20, 17-25, 28-26, 25-19.

Middle blocker Cameron Dorn had 15 kills, outside hitter Sage Patchell 11 kills and 10 digs, outside hitter Katelyn Carballo 10 kills and 18 digs, defensive specialist Kendyl Brennan 17 digs, and setters Aspen Rocha had 24 and Lauren LaMontagne 10 assists, respectively, for the Breakers.

In a nonleague match Sept. 24 at Dugger Gym, Laguna swept visiting Dana Hills, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22.

Laguna, which improved to 8-10 overall, started its Orange Coast League season Thursday against Costa Mesa. The score wasn’t available at press time. Next week, the Breakers play host to Saddleback Tuesday and Estancia Thursday, both matches starting at 5:30 p.m.

Boys’ Water Polo

In a key game on the opening day of the Orange Coast League season Wednesday, the Breakers downed visiting Costa Mesa, 11-4. Attacker Jeffrey Rubino scored five of his game-high seven goals after the halftime break.

Laguna entered the game ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division 3, and the Mustangs held down the No. 10 spot.

At the South Coast Tournament which wrapped Saturday at Corona del Mar High, Laguna went 2-3 overall. In their final game at the tournament, the Breakers outscored Los Alamitos, 3-1, in the fourth quarter to pull out a 10-9 victory over the Griffins. Jakob Colladay and Sebastian Jacobs both scored three goals and Gordon Pike had 10 saves for the Breakers.

Girls’ Tennis

The Breakers remained undefeated in the early stages of the Orange Coast League season by downing host Calvary Chapel, 16-2, at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center Tuesday.

Kelly Keller swept at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-0, 6-0), and it was a clean sweep in doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Natasha Keces/Ashley Fair won two sets (6-0, 6-0) and Megan Mindte/Jesa Chaney won a set (6-2). At No. 2, Malia Helms/Iman Berri won 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and at No. 3, Kathleen Kimball/Lina Gleizer won two sets (7-5, 6-0), and

Brigette Thomas/Taylor Corrigan won a set (7-6, 8-6 tiebreaker).

In a previous league match Sept. 24, Laguna blanked visiting Godinez, 18-0.

The Breakers were 3-0 in league play entering Thursday’s match against Estancia. The score wasn’t available at press time.

“Both the singles players and the doubles teams have played quite well, and their strong, focused effort has propelled them during the few close sets that we have had,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said of his team’s 3-0 league start.

The Breakers host a 3 p.m. Monday nonleague match against Beckman and return to league action with a 3 p.m. home match Tuesday against Saddleback that concludes the first round of the league schedule, and a 3 p.m. Thursday match at Costa Mesa.

Girls’ Golf

The Breakers scored their third-straight road victory and improved to 3-0 in Orange Coast League competition by defeating host Estancia, 220-227, in a key match at Mesa Linda Golf Course (par 33).

Sophomore BellaRose Robinson was the medalist with a score of 38. Both senior Murphy Thompson and freshman Haley Rovner also turned in strong performances, and team depth sparked the Breakers past the Eagles.

Laguna scoring: Robinson (38, medalist), Thompson (42), Rovner (45), Hailey McCullough (48), Hannah Burnett (48), and Sarah Hollinshead (47).

Laguna improved to 5-4 overall, and took a one-game lead on Estancia in the league standings.

In a league match Monday at Mile Square Park Classic Golf Course (par 36) in Fountain Valley, Laguna shot its best team score of the season in defeating Calvary Chapel, 209-239. Robinson shot a career-low 36 and was co-medalist of the match. Thompson posted a score of 38, Rovner shot a personal-best score of 33, and Hollinshead, starting her first high school match, shot a 45.

The Breakers hosted a league four-way Thursday at Ben Brown’s Golf Course. Results weren’t available at press time. They take on Costa Mesa in a league four-way match at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mesa Linda Golf Course.

Boys’ Sand Volleyball

The Breakers squared their league record at 1-1 by defeating Edison, 5-1, Sept. 24 at Grant Street Courts.

Gaining wins for Laguna were the teams of Isaac Wulff/Cole Paxson (21-16, 21-10), Pete Obradovich/Enzo Sadler (21-16, 21-12), Liam Christiansen/Ayrton Garcia (21-6, 21-12), and the two-man team of Tyler Jackson/Sam Burgi, and four-man team of Wulff/Paxson/Obradovich/Josh McManus, won by forfeit.

The Breakers took on Mater Dei Thursday but the score wasn’t available at press time. Next week, they take on Corona del Mar Thursday at Grant Street Courts.
